Nicholas Dalton, who many refer to as “Nick,” is a Director of MEP Engineering at HLZAE, where he spearheads a team of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers with unparalleled dedication. His role is a blend of strategic leadership and hands-on expertise, ensuring his team is equipped with the resources needed to deliver top-notch engineering projects. Nick’s leadership fosters technical and professional growth, while he also nurtures vital client relationships and upholds the exceptional standards synonymous with HLZAE.

Every day in Nick’s world is a mix of people management, code and standards research, and business development. Despite his managerial responsibilities, Nick thrives on diving into engineering projects, offering consulting services, conducting investigations, and leading feasibility studies. Amid the recent surge in NYC’s push for building decarbonization, Nick has emerged as a central figure, guiding clients through the complexities of Local Law 97.

Local Law 97 is one of the most ambitious climate legislations enacted by any city in the world, targeting significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions from buildings. As NYC aims to achieve its sustainability goals, Nick has taken a leading role in helping clients navigate the law’s stringent requirements. With two decades of experience under his belt, Nick’s journey into engineering was heavily influenced by his father, who introduced him to the world of construction. Starting young, Nick gained invaluable hands-on experience, cementing his passion for the built environment. A proud graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nick cherishes his roots and the education that shaped his career.

The best part of Nick’s job? The incredible team at HLZAE and the diverse New Yorkers he meets. Whether it’s property managers, board presidents, superintendents, or contractors, Nick finds joy in the relationships he builds. The toughest part? Navigating the ever-changing landscape of new laws and complex problems with century old buildings, always striving to deliver the best solutions.

Nick’s favorite building in NYC is the iconic Empire State Building, a classic symbol and a reliable compass for the city’s streets. Outside of work, Nick stays active with golfing in the summer, skiing in the winter, and running year-round. He and his wife love exploring NYC’s culinary scene and strolling the Brooklyn waterfront with their dog, Blue.

And for a fun twist: back in 2004, Nick was part of the team that built the kettle for the world’s largest bagel—a testament to his inventive spirit and love for bagels.
