B’nai Jeshurun

B’nai Jeshurun is a nearly 200-year-old landmark synagogue located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. HLZAE was hired to perform a full envelope analysis as well as assess all mechanical components for upgrades at the Community House and Synagogue, both of which are NYC Landmark properties and also listed on the National Register of Historic places.

The programs at Community House and Synagogue encompass extensive planning and multi-phased construction seasons to restore the existing ornate details of the rusticated stone, terra cotta, limestone, granite, and copper historic elements. The Community House also requires a full replacement of lot line metal and wood windows at the street elevation. This should be. With these replacements and repairs, HLZAE has worked closely with the landmark Preservation Conservancy staff for approval and to ensure the historic integrity of the historic structurers is maintained throughout the repairs and modern upgrades.

The community home services a special needs school which has required HLZAE to work on an adjusted schedule to make sure there are no disruptions to the students. Due to special event and religious services in conjunction with the school, the construction phasing and scheduled required extensive planning and communication before and during construction in order to meet the client’s specific requirements. This included but was not limited to extended hours, detailed projected scheduled, weekend work, etc. .

HLZAE is also currently working with B’nai Jeshurun to upgrade the security of the Community House by implanting a ballistics rating at street level as part of a federal grant program offered by homeland security. Envelope repairs to the Synagogue are set to kick-off in 2022.
